We want to use social media to engage our current members in our activities, reach out to potential members, interact with other outdoor organizations, increase our visibility in the local LGBT community and encourage protection of public lands and open spaces.
Our posts should reflect the fun we have in our activities, the pride we have in who we are, be inclusive of all persons and be advocate for outdoor living. Our social media posts help differentiate us from other outdoor groups and helps engage current members and potential members in club activities. In the next few weeks, we will be developing the look of our accounts.
Twitter is a social media platform where users are given 140 characters to express a thought, an idea, or an opinion. Photos can also be posted to Twitter with a small caption.
Instagram is primarily a visual social media platform that uses photos and caption space to tell a story. There are no character limits on the captioning so more complex ideas, opinions, or stories can be told through one or more photos and lengthy captions.
Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online. There are no character limits and a picture is not required but can be posted with your post.
All of the platforms use hashtags. "A hashtag is a type of label or metadata tag used on social network and micro-blogging services, which makes it easier for users to find messages with a specific theme or content. Users create and use hashtags by placing the hash character # in front of a word or unspaced phrase, either in the main text of a message or at the end. Searching for that hashtag will yield each message that has been tagged with it. A hashtag archive is consequently collected into a single stream under the same hashtag. For example, on the photo-sharing service Instagram, the hashtag #bluesky allows users to find all the posts that have been tagged using that hashtag.” WikipediaWhen using social media please tag @GreatOutdoorsPS on Twitter or Instagram.
Some examples of hashtags: #lgbt, #outdoors, #camping, #RV, #hiking, #bicyling, #PalmSprings, and #CathedralCity
