The Hike and Interpretation will be led by Tom Atchley, the Vice President of the Redlands Area Historical society - a Redlands native and retired history professor. The walking tour will concentrate on three blocks of Alvarado Street - which contains some of the most architecturally important houses in the Redlands Historic District. Reception before and after the tour by GO Members Dan and Steve.
WALKING TOUR: ALVARADO STREET IN REDLANDS - YOU KNOW THE PLACE YOU PASS TO AND FROM LA BUT HAVE NEVER GOTTEN OFF THE FREEWAY TO SEE
The houses range in age from the late 1800's through the 1930's - the majority from the Arts and Crafts period between 1900 and 1920. Tom, who is an exceptional speaker, will not only describe the architecture of the houses, but also the people who lived in them - with lots of juicy historical gossip and legend about them.
Although the walking tour will cover only the exteriors of the houses, GO members are invited to view the interior of the craftsman home of GO members Dan Haueter and Steve Villa at 602 Alvarado Street both before (8:30 A.M.) and after (11 A.M.) the walking tour. Coffee, light refreshments, and perhaps a little champagne will be served before and after the tour.
The full complement of the Ten Essentials will not be necessary, although you may wish to bring a water bottle, sun protection, layered clothing, and sensible walking shoes. Carry Emergency Contact information (ICE).
Temperatures should be mild and are likely to be slightly cooler than Palm Springs that day.
